The State Ledger
Where Sweepstakes Casinos Stand, State by State
Updated for the July 2026 edition.
The Closed States
| State | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Washington | Closed | Excluded sweepstakes casino play for years; operators block WA at registration. |
| Nevada | Closed | The regulated casino state keeps promotional casinos out; long-standing exclusion. |
| Idaho | Closed | A long-standing exclusion; no operator on our list accepts Idaho residents. |
| California | Closed – Jan 2026 | Banned by statute AB 831, effective January 2026. Operators withdrew ahead of the deadline. |
Everywhere Else
In the remaining states, sweepstakes casinos generally operate as lawful promotions because entry is free and nothing but entertainment tokens is ever sold. That said, statutes move – California proved it – and individual operators draw their own maps. An operator may lawfully serve a state yet choose not to.
Our Counsel
- Confirm your state on the operator’s own terms page before registering; that page, not ours, is binding.
- Never register through a VPN or a borrowed address. Redemptions require identity verification, and a mismatched state forfeits winnings.
- Note that 18+ is the common threshold, but several states and operators require 21+.
- Return here each cycle – we re-verify this ledger with every edition.
This page is careful reporting, not legal advice. For certainty about your own situation, consult the operator’s terms and, where it matters, a lawyer licensed in your state.
